About the Document
Cancer death rates are declining at an accelerated rate. From 1993-2002, mortality rates declined 1.1 percent annually. This decline increased to 2.1 percent per year from 2002-2004. The actual number of cancer deaths has declined for the second consecutive year, in spite of an aging and growing population. Incidence rates continue to decline for colon cancer, lung cancer in men, and breast cancer. Death rates are declining for colon cancer, lung cancer in men, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. Lung cancer incidence and death rates in women are approaching a plateau after continuously increasing for several decades.
