The American Cancer Society is pleased to announce the availability of the 2007 Strategic Plan Progress Report. This report presents the Society’s and the larger cancer community’s significant achievements and measurable progress toward the Society's strategic plan, 2015 goals, and nationwide objectives. In addition, the report calls attention to challenge areas that will require additional attention in the future.
- Highlights from the report include:
- Cancer death rates are declining at an accelerated rate. From 1993-2002, mortality rates declined 1.1 percent annually. This decline increased to 2.1 percent per year from 2002-2004.
- The actual number of cancer deaths has declined for the second consecutive year, in spite of an aging and growing population.
- Incidence rates continue to decline for colon cancer, lung cancer in men, and breast cancer.
- Death rates are declining for colon cancer, lung cancer in men, breast cancer, and prostate cancer.
- Lung cancer incidence and death rates in women are approaching a plateau after continuously increasing for several decades.
The 2007 report also includes sections chronicling the Society’s work in the area of global cancer control, progress toward income development goals, and a final chapter which illustrates the historical change in our outcome statements from 1996 to November 2006.
